Memorials are created to remember, to commemorate different matters events and people. They provide visual evidence of the existence of a particular subject, such as monuments, statues, signs, and other artefacts. When we look at history, any single event must be understood in its historical context. However, monuments built and seated in physical space end up in a situation that is irrelevant or contrary to the meaning of their construction. Can the meaning of a monument be revised? Perhaps the question we should be asking is, how do we interact with monuments? Through this ironic process, I was aiming to raise awareness of collective memory and reflexivity in society. The key to social progress and trauma recovery lies in whether people can learn and understand the impact and significance of events by facing history. History provides evidence of memory and allows one to confront the past. How to make a new monument does not intend to indicate that monuments should be preserved or abolished but to provide viewers with the method and orientation of reading historical monuments. By scratching off the surface of the photo paper by hand, I have been there presents the fragility of image memory. The mixture of fictional and real photos makes it impossible for viewers to identify its actuality. However, the idea of the monument has become a deep collective memory in people’s minds, almost all the scenes seem real when reading the photos. The in-depth connotation is a metaphor for the second reality where memory can be manipulated and its break with reality under the rise of global historical revision and cancel culture. The revelation of the political background of the work also considers the status relationship between the creator and the viewer. The high-hanging but destroyed paintings, and the tiny paper dust ball that need to be looked down on, present a polarised status from the same subject. Through whom does the viewer identify the subject as a monumental statue? Is it the form of a statue, the silhouette of an image, or a symbol of authority that exists in memory? The authenticity of every link in the work is vacant. Due to COVID-19, many buildings lie empty, feeding into a city-wide phenomenon of vacancy, often leading to dereliction. To a Passer-by is inviting artists to respond to these spaces and create audio works which can be listened to on a walk around the city. Coming to this city as a traveler, all visual experiences are new and unfamiliar to me. Once when I was walking on the road, I heard a familiar sound, which was very similar to the street noise I would hear when I was in Taiwan. For a moment, my mind created a flowing image based on this sound and covered my current sight. Suddenly I felt like I was in two different spaces at the same time. When necessary, return to the archived images to read partial information. WYSIWYL works in reverse against the habit of viewing. Analyse the position of the pupil watching the screen through the microscopic camera, interpret the area where the user watches the picture, and immediately remove the image of the area. Just like the twelve constellations, the starlight does not come from planets in the same region, and the co-constructed images do not mean that they have a similar time-space relationship. This is true of distant galaxies, and so is the world in front of us. Once the shutter is off, the things stored in the photo match up. We are so good at image construction that the truth serves the image, the truth can be discarded, and the truth has nothing to do with reality. All context is within the image. In this work, artefacts are separated by a tiny central gap in this series of photographs.
