Monument I (2022)
Digital photographic print, scratched paper dust, 3d print, metal stand, dimension variableBy scraping off the surface of the photo paper by hand, Monument I materially presents the fragility of image memory. The in-depth connotation is a metaphor for the second reality where memory can be manipulated and its break with reality under the rise of global historical revision and cancel culture.
The revelation of the political background of the work also considers the status relationship between the creator and the viewer. The high-hanging but destroyed paintings, and the tiny paper dust ball that need to be looked down on, present a polarised status from the same subject.
Through whom does the viewer identify the subject as a monumental statue? Is it the form of a statue, the silhouette of an image, or a symbol of authority that exists in memory? The authenticity of every link in the work is vacant. They close and refer to each other, but let the viewers themselves have some kind of moral and political associations.
