Di Pi Ju Chang is a pop-up art event that serves as a temporal platform for citizens to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the changing urban landscape of Taoyuen. Our unique project takes place in Holiao, a community woven together by several villages whose livelihoods are intricately tied to the surrounding fields and ponds. However, Holiao has been earmarked by the government as the next urban development zone, destined to be transformed into a residential area characterized by towering buildings.
We have deliberately chosen this area as the backdrop for the performance, where participants will have the opportunity to bid farewell to this expropriated land through a series of immersive experiences.

Our production unfolds in three distinct acts, beginning with a disguised bus tour that seamlessly blends art and exploration. This unconventional journey provides a gateway for audiences to enter Holiao, a space currently undergoing urbanisation.
The second act of our event experience is an art performance. We aim to convey the essence of the evolving landscape, inviting participants to reflect on the multifaceted nature of change and its impact on both the physical environment and the lives of its inhabitants. This thought-provoking artistic display encourages audiences to explore their own emotions and perspectives on the evolving urbanization process.
Lastly, we culminate our production with a pseudo-auction, where we challenge the traditional notion of value by offering items that cannot be easily quantified in monetary terms. These items encompass elements deeply rooted in the local culture, such as traditional religious events and spirits revered in traditional beliefs. By placing these intangible treasures up for auction, we prompt participants to reassess the worth and significance of their heritage amidst the ongoing transformation.
Through Di Pi Ju Chang, we aspire to create a space where citizens can engage in meaningful conversations about the changing landscapes they inhabit. By combining elements of art, exploration, and reevaluation of cultural values, we aim to foster a deep connection between participants and the land they are bidding farewell to. Our project seeks to inspire reflection, dialogue, and appreciation for the intricate interplay between development and heritage in Taoyuen.
